Music At UUCC
About Music At UUCC
The Music Committee
Plans, oversees and supports musical offerings and activities at Sunday services and on other occasions. The Music Committee responsibilities and activities are:
- Work with the minister and Worship Committee to support the life and ministry of the church through music, and advocate for the music program.
- Make sure that the musicians have the physical resources they need (sheet music, instruments) and that these are in order and well-maintained.
- Oversee the scheduling of pianists for worship services, and promote communication with the congregation.
- Prepare a yearly budget request, and advise Board of Trustees on musicians’ pay.
- Maintain a connection with the larger community of UU musicians through UU Musicians Network (UUMN) membership and, when possible, attendance at the UUMN annual conference.
- Sponsor and assist with musical events.
- Musicians are supervised by the minister and the board president. Music for worship, other than hymns, is selected by the musicians in consultation with the minister or worship leader.
Choir - Under the direction of the Music Director, the choir sings twice a month at Sunday Services. The choir helps the congregation sing better, sets the tone for worship and deepens the worship experience. The Choir sings pieces covering a diverse array of genres, incorporating classical, folk, jazz, gospel, and even occasionally a Broadway show tune if the text fits the occasion. The choir practices on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 in the Sanctuary. If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact the Music Director at firstname.lastname@example.org or 207-622-3232.
Fellowship of Pianists- A fellowship of five pianists share in the assignments to Sunday morning services throughout the year. One pianist takes up the responsibility of scheduling. The pianist works as requested with the worship leader to plan music.
UUCC Occasional Orchestra The UUCCOO started in Spring 2011. The UUCCOO performs a wide variety of sacred and secular music, from classics by Vivaldi and Bach to folk tunes, marches, hymns and modern video game melodies. We combine a diverse array of instruments, including violins, flutes, recorders, bassoon, cello, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, percussion, piano and electronic wind instrument (EWI). We welcome players of additional instruments to our group and are particularly seeking a French horn, a viola and a double bass. Musicians of all ages and levels of experience are welcome.
The UUCCOO usually rehearses from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church sanctuary on the first and third Saturdays of each month. The UUCCOO plays at special Sunday services and joins with the UUCC Choir for winter and spring concerts each year.
If you * want more information or are interested in joining our Orchestra, please contact Dale McCormick, Coordinator or Conductor Dan Gilbert at DanGilbertbassI.
Special Music on Sundays Special music and guest musicians are coordinated throughout the year. Selections are made based on service theme and intention as well as member gifts and talents. Do you enjoy singing or playing a musical instrument? If so, we invite you to share your music in worship on a special music Sunday. For more information, please contact Music Committee Chair Hannah Faulkner.
